The Doggie Deli - Recipes For Great Danes

Minty Fresh Biscuits

1 tbsp vegetable oil

1 cup water

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1/2 cup oatmeal

2 tablespoons dried mint (or 1/3 cup fresh chopped)

1/3 cup chopped parsley

Preheat oven to 375 degreesCombine water and oil in a large bowl.  Gradually add flour, oatmeal, mint and parsley.  Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness.  Cut into shapes.  Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 35 mins.

Liver Brownies 2

Great for non- baiters and no diarrhea later.

1 lb liver

1 package dry Lipton soup, any flavor

2 eggs

3 cups oatmeal

1 tsp crushed garlic

Puree liver in blender.  Add eggs, soup and garlic, blend.  Pour into bowl and add oatmeal.  Mix well.  Grease a 10x15 pan.  Pour

in mixture and bake 1 hr at 250 - 300 degrees.  Cut immediately and freeze.  You can add some garlic salt to the storage bag also.

Chicken & Herb Biscuits

2 1/2 tsp dry yeast

1/4 cup luke warm water

1 egg

3/4 cup chicken broth

1/4 honey

3 cups whole wheat flour

1 cup cracked wheat

2 tbsp parsley dry or fresh

1 tsp oregano

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  In large bowl, dissolve yeast in water.  Add egg, broth and honey.  Gradually add flour and cracked wheat  Add enough wheat flour to form a stiff dough. On floored surface knead until smooth (about 3 mins.). Roll out to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheet 1/4 inch apart. Bake for 45 mins. Let cool over night. Makes several dozen and they freeze well.

Tess' Tasty Treats, by Ann Shaw

 

Feed these green, speckled treats to your dog and notice the difference! Mint and Parsley are natural breath fresheners. The crunchy biscuits help prevent tarter from building up on your dog's teeth.

    2 cups whole wheat flour
    1/2 cup chopped parsley
    1/2 cup cornmeal
    3/4 cup water
    1/3 cup chopped fresh mint (or dried mint)
    6 tbsp sunflower oil

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, cornmeal, mint and parsley in a large bowl. Add oil and water and mix thoroughly. Roll out to 1/4" on floured surface and cut with cookie cutters. Bake for 40 minutes, or until lightly browned. Turn heat off and let biscuits dry out in oven for several hours. Store in refrigerator in airtight container.

Pooch's Prozak Krunchies

    2 cups whole wheat flour
    1/2 cup chicken broth
    2/3 cups yellow cornmeal
    2 eggs mixed with 1/4 cup of milk
    1/2 cup sunflower seeds, shelled
    1 egg, beaten
    Pinch of sugar
    2 tsp fresh crushed mint (a natural antidepressant for dogs)
    2 tbsp. corn oil

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, blend together flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt and seeds. Add oil, chicken broth and egg & milk mixture. Let sit 30 minutes. Place mixture on floured surface. Spread out dough 1/4" thick. Cut into small circles, shapes like smiley faces, and brush with beaten egg. Bake 30 minutes until golden brown. Let stand until cool. Makes about 40 treats.

Homemade Dog Biscuits

    3 to 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
    1 pkg Dry yeast
    2 cups whole wheat flour
    4 tsp salt (or substitute herbs)
    1 cup rye flour and cornmeal
    2 cups chicken stock
    2 cups cracked wheat (bulgar or burghul)
    1 egg and 1tbsp of milk to brush on top.
    1/2 cup nonfat dry milk

Combine all dry ingredients, except the yeast. In separate bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. To this, add chicken stock (you can use bouillon, pan drippings or water from cooking vegetables). Add liquid to dry ingredients. Knead mixture for about three minutes. Dough will be quite stiff. If too stiff, add extra liquid or egg.

 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll dough out on floured board to 1/2 inch thickness. Immediately cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Place on baking stone and brush with the white of an egg and milk. Place in oven and after 45 minutes. Turn off the oven and let cookies stay in oven overnight to get bone hard.

Honey Peanut Butter Treats

    3/4 cup flour
    1 tsp baking soda
    1 egg
    1/4 tsp salt
    1 heaping tbsp honey
    1/4 cup rolled oats
    1 heaping tsp peanut butter
    1/2 tsp vanilla
    1/4 cup vegetable shortening

Heat honey and peanut butter until runny (about 20 seconds) in microwave. Mix ingredients together and drop by 1/2 teaspoon onto baking stone and bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 mins.

Muffy's Meat Loaf

    1/2 cup finely copped celery
    1 cup grated potato
    1 cup grated carrot
    1 cup finely minced fresh beef or calf liver
    1 cup fine bread crumbs
    1 lb. lean ground beef
    1 egg (beaten)
    1/2 tsp salt

Mix all ingredients together. Bake at 350 degrees in a loaf pan until done. Meat loaf will shrink from sides of pan when cooked.

Liver Graham Cracker Squares

    1 lb. liver
    1 package graham crackers
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/4 cup honey

Put cut-up liver into food processor. Break up graham crackers and add to food processor. Add garlic powder and honey. Blend till the consistency of thick cake batter. Spray with cooking spray in a 8 x 8 microwave safe baking dish. Nuke for 10 to 13 minutes, cool and slice into squares. Freeze and use as necessary for bait or treats.

Liver Brownies

    1 lb. liver
    1 cup white corn meal
    2 large eggs
    1 Tbsp. garlic powder

Preheat oven to 345 degrees. Put cut-up liver into food processor. Blend in corn meal, eggs and garlic powder. Blend until the consistency of thick cake batter. Spray 8 x 10 glass pan with cooking spray. Bake for 30 minutes. Cool and slice into squares for bait and treats. Freeze and use as necessary.

Chicken Milk Bone
(A good alternative to bait for training or show)

    3/4 cup chicken broth or use chicken soup base
    1/3 cup margarine
    1 egg
    1 tsp. salt
    3 tbsp. garlic powder
    3 cups flour or wheat flour
    1 cup chicken or beef liver pureed

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Mix ingredients, adding flour last. This should form a stiff dough. Add flour as needed. Roll out to 1/2 inch thick. Place dough on large cookie sheet and sprinkle with garlic powder. Baste with additional chicken or beef base if desired. Using a sharp knife, cut into treat sizes or use a cookie cutter. Bake 50 minutes and store.

Peanut Butter Biscuits

    2 cups whole wheat flour, plus some to dust the work surface
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1 cup unsalted natural peanut butter
    1 cup skim milk
    cooking spray

Stir together 2 cups flour and baking powder; set aside
In a med. bowl, mix peanut butter and milk until thoroughly blended.
Stir in flour mixture.

Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth.
Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut with bone shaped cookie cutter.
Grease cookie sheets and place biscuits two inches apart.
Bake in a pre-heated 375 - degree oven until lightly browned, about 20 mins.
Store in airtight container in refrigerator.
Should keep at least 3 weeks.

New Dog Biscuits of Several Different Flavors

2 1/2 c Whole wheat flour
1/2 c Powdered milk
1/2 tsp Salt

1/2 tsp Garlic powder
1 tsp Brown sugar
6 tbs Butter (or margarine)
1 egg (beaten)
1/2 c Ice water

Combine the flour, milk, salt, garlic powder and sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles  cornmeal. Mix in egg then add enough ice water to make a ball. Pat dough to 1/2 inch thick on a lightly oiled cookie sheet. Cut out shapes with cookie cutter and bake on cookie sheet for 25 mins at 350F.
 

To vary the flavor, at the time the egg is added, add any of the following:

1 cup pureed cooked green vegetables or carrots
6 tablespoons of whole wheat or rye kernels
3 tablespoons of liver powder (can be found at the health food store)
