2010 Rally to Rescue Booth - Shawnee Mission Park

Rescue had a Rally to Rescue booth at the Paws in the Park event at Shawnee Mission Park on June 19th. John Gleason, Tammy Suddeth (with Ava) and Carol Brendel (with Shamu) represented the club and Rescue. Ava romped with a host of smaller dogs on the swimming beach; Shamu got maybe two toes wet and that was good enough for him. A sudden storm came up and the event was shut down a little early; it was a bit of a challenge trying to hang on to the tent while the wind tried to carry it away (along with Tammy and Carol hanging on for dear life), but we managed to get everything packed up without mishap and without getting too wet.

2010 Kansas City Pet Expo

For the first time, the GDCGKC participated in this major Kansas City pet event, held April 17th and 18th at the American Royal building. We handed out 125 flyers about the Club (and would have handed out more, but we ran out) and Rescue chair Janet Quick reports receiving several calls and emails about Rescue dogs as a result of these contacts. Our booth attracted hundreds of visitors and our dogs were a huge hit. It was kind of comical to see people coming around the corner and doing a double-take when they saw our dogs; they invariably flocked around us and asked to pet the dogs and feed them treats. John Gleason was even interviewed by a camera crew from a local high school. This event was a huge success for us and we definitely plan to do it again next year.

We had two tables, one for the Club and one for Rescue. The Rescue table had some Rally to Rescue magazines, t-shirts and collars, complimentary McCartney dog calendars, and business cards with Janet’s contact information, as well as two large photo boards with pictures of Rescue Danes. The Club table had the informational flyers we handed out, two big photo boards made by Joy and Jerry Lobato of conformation champions and Danes competing in performance events, and several of Jerry Lobato’s bronze Dane sculptures.

A giant thank you is due to the people who volunteered their time for this event: Tammy Suddeth (with Ava and Stanley), Joy and Jerry Lobato, John Gleason, Carol Brendel (with Rowdy and Shamu), Cathy and Doug Cade, Amy Eve (with Tyson), Cheryl Bales (with Hannah), Libby Willson (with Dakota), and Karrie Franks (with Duncan). We all had a great time, including the dogs. Here are some pictures, most were taken early in the day before the crowds got thick:

We were blessed with great weather and everyone had a GREAT time. It is so nice to see so many of our adopted Danes and meet new people with their adult and puppy Danes. We started the event with a woodland scavenger hunt. Most people found the items on their list with the exception of the Copperhead. They were all looking for a snake and of course it was copper pennies placed on rocks. Only one person found the copper head. We gave out toys to all the dogs.

The next contest was a whip cream contest where the owner smears whip cream on his/her face and the first dog to clean their owners face is the winner. This is a very funny contest.

Another contest was bobbin for hot-dogs. Only the puppies were not so smart they just kept drinking water. We had three winners for that contest.

We also had a costume contest since it was the day after Halloween. The winner was a Dane dressed as a horse with a jockey on its back. First place winners received a stained glass rosette.

We had a demonstration of Rally OB and Agility put on by Am/Int. Ch.Kappadane's Mystik Blue Smoke CDX RE AX AXJ NF TDIA HOF VA HIT. Smoke is the number one Dane in Excellent Agility in the country this year to date.

Our Rally to Rescue booth gave out Purina Carvers and samples of Shredded Blend to all the dogs. Then we had a picnic of hot-dogs, chili,  and wonderful deserts. It was a lot of fun; thank you all for coming.

GDCGKC Rescue Event

Paws In The Park

Rally to Rescue had a booth at Paws in the Park in Parkville, Mo.  9-20-08  This was a fundraiser for the Parkville Animal shelter.  John Gleason - Carol Brendel and Tammy Suddeth staffed the booth. Tammy brought Ava and Drake the 7 month old rescue puppy that had to have an eye removed due to a birth defect. Tammy is fostering him.  Carol brought Shamu who is always a big hit with the crowd.  It was a beautiful day that brought out a big crowd.  Two different couples stopped by the booth each having two Danes.

The Danes were the stars of the event.

The Meaning of Rescue

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed
All nicely tucked in my warm bed,
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is much to carry -
So much to forget

Hmmm . . . Yes, there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack loneliness, heartache and loss;
And there by my leash hides fear and shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called pain.

I loved them, the others, the ones who left me.
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?

Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see.
But I do come with baggage  -
Will you still want me?
